Beauty and the Beast. How can a bike that looks as good as the Hodaka win the nation

s Trailbike Championship 3 years running?
"The word is simplicity" reports a noted test writer. "Six tools. Six simple, inexpensive tools plus a standard set ol metrics is all it takes to completely teardown and reassemble this little masterpiece ol design.”
102 mph from 5.99 cubic inches displacement!
You are looking at an actual size photograph of the Hodaka’s single piston.
This tiny item develops 9.8 hp at 7500 rpm. 1.63 hp per cubic inch displacement. The same as Andy Granatelli's PIymouth-powered Indianapolis '500' contender, now being developed. And that’s just the beginning. Using production racing accessories. Hodaka-mounted Harry Taylor won the 1968 Daytona Roadrace Classic, turning speeds in excess of 100 mph!
You’ve got to finish to win.
"While the other makes of motorcycles. large and small, dropped like flies from the pounding, the Hodakas went on, and on, and on." (Direct quote
from Cycle’s Racing Annual report of the 1968 Cochella Hare Scrambles). We’ve mentioned simplicity of design. Here's just how simple. Hodaka’s basic power-plant consists of three moving parts. (Fig. 2). That's all. By comparison, the basic engine components of an average V-8 engine number eighty-one.
It’s an established fact. The fewer parts, the less chance there is for something to go wrong. One of the first Hodakas ever built has been enthusiastically raced for years and is still going strong.
Getting power to the ground.
Engine power poorly transmitted is like a track star without shoes. You’re looking at the guts of Hodaka’s standard five-speed transmission (Fig. 3). Gear selection is achieved through the use of a scientific spring loaded control rod mechanism that insures positive gear changes. It works so well, we patented it.
With trail sprocket attached, the low gear ratio is a stump-pulling 42.37 to 1. Fifth gear street ratio is 8.71 to 1, good for nearly 70 mph.
Frame withstands 500cc power.
When the Hodaka was first introduced. full steel tube frames were seldom found on lightweight machines. Hodaka changed all that. Not only was
Hodaka one of the first to offer a truly 'big bike’ frame on a lightweight, but we made it better. Twin steel tubes fully protect and envelop the engine and gearbox unit. Skid plates are unnecessary for anything less than all-out competition. Vented gussets are heli-arc welded at every stress point for added strength. Ground clearance is high at 8.7 inches. And weight is amazingly light. Dry weight is only 170 lbs. for the complete machine.
One model — 1001 uses.
The Hodaka is successful because it’s all we make. One model. One size. With the widest selection of competition and pleasure accessories ever designed for a single motorcycle. You can practically custom design to suit any taste. Any requirement.
Stop by your dealer soon and test ride the Hodaka first-hand. And send the coupon below to us for your copy of "The Hodaka Story.” a complete technical and historical description.
The Hodaka moto-cross, scrambler, enduro, flat-tracker, road racer, trailbike.
Hodaka mounted Harry Taylor, winner of the Zillah Hare and Hound 125cc class, concentrates on checkpoint directions . . . and for good reason. Inclement weather forced Taylor, always a strong competitor, to ride without the eyeglasses he normally wears.
The Hodaka '100' five-speed. America's most versatile trailbike. Winner of the 1966, '67, '68 National Trailbike Championships.
From trailing to roadracing, the success of the Hodaka is legendary.
How can a motorcycle produced in only one size (100cc) and model (trail) be so many things to so many people?
Easy.
Hodaka's single design has been simplified, strengthened, and improved for six years. No other motorcycle can boast such functional reliability.
And more accessories are now designed specifically for the Hodaka than any other single motorcycle in history.
Just name your event, bolt on the accessory items that produce the kind of performance needed, and you've got a potential winner.
Cyclists are individuals. With the Hodaka, you can custom design to suit any taste or requirement. The sky's the limit.
Who'd have thought that America's unique one-size, one-model motorcycle would ever offer more variety to cyclists than many multi-model manufacturers?
