Most of these Hudnut 'Marvelous' cold cream jars are newer as these were made into the 1920's and beyond, but there are very early examples that will turn purple, as this one is. As the old saying says, '
Try and find another ...
! That is how rare the purple examples are and the figuring behind the pricing of this one.
You hear about old glass turning
purple in the sunlight ... here is the way it works. This beautiful purple amethyst color is the result of this jar being blown with manganese-glass, and then over time, being exposed to ultra violet rays which oxidize the manganese and turn it purple. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to ultraviolet rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. This can be achieved by long term exposure to sunlight and other processes that expose the item to intense UV rays. The longer it is in the sun, the deeper purple it turns until it is so purple that it looks like a grape, as this one does. But with few exceptions, ONLY clear glass vessels from before 1914 have manganese in and will turn sun-colored-amethyst. This is the key, this is a super early antique jar. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking antique bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique
