Schieffelin and Co. dates back to the foundation of the United States to a man named Jacob Schieffelin. Jacob was a merchant and importer, selling raw materials to physicians for making their own medicines. He also imported and sold paints, perfumes, gunpowder, and other goods. Business grew, acquisitions happened and soon prohibition was in full force and Schieffelin's imports turned to alcohol for medicinal purposes. It was in this way that the 125-year-old drug wholesaler developed a thriving new wine and spirit business. Schieffelin and Co. has evolved to Schieffelin & Somerset Co. and still imports and sells alcohol. This box is in good condition with the chain attaching the lid to the box. It was used to ship Ruffino Chianti from Pontassieve, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Florence in the Italian region Tuscany.
