MILK GLASS -- white colored glass
antique COSMETIC container with a picture of a
PEACOCK BIRD
on the cover label. It has
labels on both the top and bottom
and there is NO embossing anywhere in the glass, it is a label only container. These type of glass and pottery cosmetic containers are referred to as '
pot lids
', and originally came packed with various types of cosmetic creams and lotions and consist of both glass base and glass lid. Most are short round pottery containers, but there are also quite a few glass ones as well. This is
one of just a few of them that are an ornate oval shape
.
This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE
M
old
B
lown container, dating back to the very early 1900's
.
Labels read, in part
: "
Jonteel
COMBINATION CREAM
" and back label goes on to make a lot of claims, "
COMBINATION CREAM JONTEEL ... Is excellent for practically all the uses for which creams are intended ... you will experience the most refreshing sensation from the wonderful ODOR JONTEEL
". And last, but not least, the label on the base finishes by saying "
Will not turn rancid or grow hair
" ... GOOD TO KNOW!
.
Condition
:
Both the glass base and lid are in overall good condition with just some wear from age and use. The lid is sturdy, the larger base has some chipping around the thin edge of rim, from glass to glass contact with the lid. Other than that these to not have any chips, cracks, dings, damage, etc. The labels are in good condition, the top label has an area in the bird's tail that has wear and scuffing, rough to the touch. But as you can see from the pictures, it isn't very noticeable unless attention is drawn to it. Please see picture for better idea of LABEL'S condition
.
Age
: A hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled-top, ca. early
1900's

insurance. We have enjoyed shipping our items all over the world and are happy to offer most of our items to international buyers. Yet insuring International parcels is very expensive so PLEASE NOTE; we do
NOT
insure International orders unless winning buyer specifically requests this and we are able to provide an insurance quote. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and send payment acknowledgments and shipping confirmations. Your prompt payment will assure a very quick turn-around time.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If our shipping charge is much more than the actual shipping cost, we will refund the excess so what
YOU
pay for shipping/insurance is very close to, if not exactly, the
ACTUAL
shipping costs! This is especially important for foreign buyers to know as most of our foreign shipping charges are rough estimates

These old cosmetic cream pot lids are a category of collecting in themselves. There are many ceramic ones that have stenciling on the top of the lid and even fewer glass ones which, when they retain their original paper labels, are quite attractive.
This oval s
hape is quite rare, possibly even uniqu
e,
and there are also a few rectangular shaped ones as well. It is not just the oval shape that makes this one desirable but also the colorful picture on the top label, a Peacock or some type of bird. It stands out very well against the stark black background. As far as the Jonteel Company and their Combination Cream goes, it probably wasn't all that it claimed to be as indicated by the fact that
their products don't seem to be around in today's world. An internet search reveals very little about this company except super early-1900 advertisements
for their products of old. To sum it up, this is not only a scarce pot lid in the oval shape and a desirable pot lid to look at with the colorful label, but it is also a rare one as well. Only so many antique cosmetic bottles and jars have survived the ravages of time with their original paper label's intact,
this one could even be unique, a finite one-of-a-kind item,
