    Pisolitic Limestone
    Age: Middle Jurassic
Pisolitic limestone is white or yellowish brown. Its texture is made interesting by pisolites, spherical bodies over 2 mm in diameter made out of calcium carbonate. Pisolitic limestone comes from the precipitation of calcite and other minerals from warm, turbulent water.
Pisolitic limestone is only of interest to collectors, because it has no industrial value.
The pisolitic limestone characteristically occurs as a discontinuous zone of white to pink, large nodules of hard dense limestone. The zone is about 1 foot thick or less and is the topmost layer of the calcareous upper part of the Kimball Member. Where best developed it forms a continuous layer 2 or 3 feet thick but without bedding planes. It occurs at the surface or is overlain by a thin mantle of Pleistocene loess or eolian sand. Secondary encrustations of white calcium carbonate coat the bottom and sides of the nodules.
    A
    pisolite
is a sedimentary rock made of pisoids, which are concretionary grains - often of calcium carbonate, but sometimes of rarer minerals - which resemble ooids but are always more than 2 mm in diameter. These grains are approximately spherical and have concentric layers reaching 10 mm in diameter.
