The General Company of Agriculture of the Vineyards of Alto Douro, also referred to as Company for Agriculture of the Vineyards of Alto Douro or simply as
"Real Companhia Velha"
, was a privileged company, of monopolist character, created by the Marquis of Pombal, in the second half of the century XVIII, in Portugal.
Founded in 1756, it held the exclusive production and distribution of wines from the demarcated Douro region, the well-known Port wines, privileged with tax exemption in trade and exports. These were in great demand in the British market and an increasing weight in the Portuguese trade balance at the time.
